Do we get a backstory and a humanizing angle for a character that was just really supposed to be a conduit for crude sex jokes? Also, Oscar winner Julianne Moore shows up! I did not expect the Mary Katherine Gallagher movie to be so sweet. Shannon has a deep knowledge and affection for her character, who, beneath the surface, is a lonely, love-starved teen just trying to figure herself out.
It was some self-indulgent and pointless nostalgia, but people loved it so much they made a Blues Brothers movie, which turned out to be one of the best and most important American comedy films ever.
The Blues Brothers finds Jake fresh out of prison and Elwood striving to get their amazing band back together in order to raise enough money to prevent their old orphanage from closing. The movie, though, was a groundbreaking, self-aware, fourth-wall-breaking, highly sophisticated comic masterpiece.
The Ladies Man was released in and was yet another SNL film that did horribly at the box office. Phelps was a radio talk-show host who would often give advice on sex. The plot of the film is pretty straight forward, with Phelps getting fired and trying to track down an old love interest, while also being hunted by numerous boyfriends and husbands.
The film had some talented cast members, including Karyn Parsons and Billy Dee Williams, but nothing was able to save the film. The Ladies Man not only failed at the box office but was also panned by critics. The last SNL film to be released is now 9 years old. The skits usually involved MacGruber trying to diffuse a bomb, only to panic under the pressure and blow up.
The film follows MacGruber as he comes out of retirement to battle his arch-enemy named Dieter Von Cunth. Since the Brothers only appeared on SNL performing songs, there was no need to call back to the sketch comedy; the movie was allowed to create its own world with its own rules. No SNL movie would share the same luxury again. You'd be hard-pressed to find a movie as raucous or fun as The Blues Brothers.
The fact that the first two SNL films produced were the best doesn't bode well, as another eight movies were still to come. This is the movie that created the formula for future SNL films: take popular, possibly one-joke characters from the show and fill 90 minutes with a thin plot while referencing the original sketches as often as possible. Amazingly, this one works; there's a sense that Mike Myers, Dana Carvey.
Unlike " The Blues Brothers ," the movie hasn't dated well, but there's no denying the huge impact it once had. Here's where it all went off the rails. It all began with " Coneheads. Sadly, all the comedic talent in the world couldn't save this movie, which was ill-conceived from the word "go. Given the success of the pop culture phenomenon that was the first " Wayne's World ," Mike Myers and Lorne Michaels were quick to strike while the iron was hot.
Myers takes everything that once felt fresh and funny in the original film and recreates it to lesser effect, all the while self-consciously winking at the audience in that "Remember this? Isn't it great? It's the exact same sin he would commit a few years later with the Austin Powers franchise; the first feeling new and fun, while future installments felt bloated, lazy and smug.
And we can all agree that the idea could barely be stretched to the length of a single sketch, right? Someone clearly believed an entire film could be sustained by characters trying to guess the gender of Sweeney's whiny creation and "It's Pat: The Movie " was born.
They may have been wrong. The movie barely received theatrical distribution, opening in only three cities. The Ladies Man R 84 min Comedy 5.
